Some days are better than others… today I had the opportunity to see a massive part of the coral, approximate 50m wide, just slide down slope. The panorama was very sad; tons of coral just covered in sand, a very big cloud all around, for a moment it seemed like a big bulldozer had just pass through destroying everything on its way. Could not help but thinking all the small creatures that probably died instantly, and the amount of time that the reef had taken to get this far … now just gone.
It’s a natural occurrence, there is not much we can do to prevent it, or to fix it, nobody to blame, it just happens, the same as when a mountain slides, too much coral weight perhaps, it’s just the way the ocean floor is formed around Bonaire.
Still left work today with a bitter soul and feeling nostalgic.
